Deer Hunting Begins

Gary Moore flew in from Florida and bagged this buck in Frio County. It scored 131 B&C.

The finished product...

I pulled the forms and filled it with water and was very pleased with the results.

Making the pour...

Now I wait several days and remove the forms. These are water troughs for wildlife. I plan to do seven more.

Out Scouting for Bucks...

Guayacan, "Ironwood"

This bush with its red seed pods is high in crude protein and good brouse for deer. Louis Turcotte refered to it as "Mexican Christmas Tree". Once while I visited on their ranch "San Pablo" between Hebronville and Zapata they had one decorated inside with popcorn and other Christmas decorations. It is said to be the hardest wood in Texas.

We were out dove hunting yesterday and actually had a decent hunt. Sandra even got two birds on her first shot.

Forms for water troughs...

Well, here it is. Now I have to transport it to the ranch and get to work. I'll show you the finished product... if it works.

Out in the brush...

A friend sent me this picture. It is of two large rattlesnakes doing their dance. I've seen pictures of this behavior before. I'm guessing it is two large females and it is probably a dominance thing.... I'm bigger than you. Anyway, they were reported to both be longer than six feet.
How about this for building your nest where the preditors can't get at it?

Sneaking up on "Ferdinand"...

This is Sam's deer "Ferdinand". I know you have seen other pictures I have posted of this deer. He just happens to be one of the few deer that lets us get fairly close.
He has eleven points, six on his right side and five on his left. If you look closely you can see two tines coming from where his G-4 is on his right side.
Ferdinand is now three and one half years old and has a nice set of antlers for a deer that age.
As I told you he will let us get fairly close. This is Sam Syring pictured on the left. Sam owns the ranch where Ferdinand resides.

Fawn spotted resting in the grass...

I was out with Sam this evening when we spotted this fawn resting in the grass not far from a stock tank.
I got out to take its picture and while doing so I got a little too close so it got up and moved a short distance away and stopped to check me out.
